In 2022, LGITSA finalised and officially launched its Cyber Security Framework and Implementation Toolkit for Local Government.  The Framework includes baseline control expectations incorporating the Essential Eight and other security controls for information, personnel, and facilities.  The accompanying Implementation Toolkit features templates and supporting guidelines which are tiered to cater for different risk profiles.

A summary of recommended steps for Local Governments include:

  • Establish and embed a structure for managing security into your Council’s organisational structure
  • Review and adopt the new Framework to increase the maturity of your cyber security program
  • Sign up for the Local Government Association Mutual Fund (LGAAMF) cyber security uplift program
  • Ensure your Council is a LGITSA member to receive updates and network information about the Framework

This project was funded by the Local Government Research & Development Scheme administered by the Local Government Association of South Australia.

To further mature the next iteration of the Framework, LGITSA is collaborating with the Australian Cyber Security Centre, Department of Home Affairs, Department of the Premier and Cabinet and LGA of South Australia.  Collectively, we aim to continue to grow the maturity and resilience of the sector through training resources, up-to-date advice, revisions of the Framework, and sector assessments.

Local Government Risk Services (LGRS), LGA Asset Mutual Fund (LGAAMF)

The LGA Asset Mutual Fund (LGAAMF) provides Local Government Members with broad cover of their physical assets, integrated with a specialised claims management system.  This solution provides Members with a greater level of control over the costs involved with protecting their physical assets.
